Credit Unions vs. Banks

When you are deciding where to save and borrow, it can be hard to find the right place to start. Many don’t know the difference between a bank and a credit union. So, what is a credit union, anyway?

CREDIT UNIONS

Credit unions are unique in that they are completely member-controlled. When you become a Member of KTVAECU, you also get a say in the decisions we make. Your guidance helps keep us on the right track!

Structure/Philosophy — Not for profit, but for service.

Ownership — Member-owned and controlled.

Earning — All profits are returned to members in the form of new products, additional services, lower fees, and expanded locations.

BANKS

Banks are controlled by profits and shareholders. They are typically more “corporate,” meaning their decisions are made by boards and committees rather than their customers.

Structure/Philosophy — Banks are corporations, which exist to earn a profit for shareholders.

Ownership — Shareholder (investor) owned and controlled.

Earning — All profits are distributed to the stockholders in proportion to the number of shares owned.

Member Benefits

Unexpected things happen to all of us. Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union offers each Member (age 18 or older) up to $1,500.00 of complimentary AD&D insurance underwritten by Minnesota Life Insurance Company. All coverage reduces by 50.00% at age 70 and older, regardless of age at enrollment.
